Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Learn About Substances That Can Cause Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Allergic Contact Dermatitis appeared when your skin reacted to a direct contact with certain chemical substance (allergen). You can have allergic contact dermatitis if you are already sensitive to certain substance. The sensitization usually need several days to grow within your body. If there is another skin contact with the substance, allergic contact dermatitis reaction will appear within 48 hours.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis Symptoms

The skin irritation on allergic contact dermatitis patient is similar with eczema.

  • Redness, swelling.

  • Blister skin, then get thicker and scaly.

  • Very itchy.

  • Only attack certain area of the body, which can explain the cause of the allergic contact dermatitis. For example, if you wear a wrist watch, and the redness or swelling appeared on your wrist area, then you’ll know that you are allergic to the nickel plated of your wrist watch.

If you or your doctor are not sure about the allergen, the doctor will get you a patch test.

Nickel
The most common substance is nickel (usually from accessories, zipper, buckles, bra clip or jeans button). Chrome plated or stainless steel object can sometimes also contain nickel. When you are sweating, nickel substrate can cause itchy and prickling sensation on the area where you wear the accessories. Solution: substitute nickel accessories with nylon or plastic ones.

Latex
If you have allergic contact dermatitis to latex substrate, wearing rubber gloves could trigger your allergic reaction. Itchy and tearing eyes are the common symptoms, besides dermatitis around the area under the rubber gloves. Solution: you can wear vinyl or other synthetic gloves for substitution. Rubber can also found in women’s underwear and some casual footwear. Avoid or replace them with non-rubber ones.

Chemical
Chemical substance which cause allergic contact dermatitis can be found in cosmetics products like hair dyes, lotions, perfumes. Solution: permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes usually cause allergic contact dermatitis. Use temporary dyes or vegetable dyes for substitution. Solution: for you who are allergic to some cosmetics, find non-allergic cosmetics that are sold in many department stores. These are few alternatives :

Tips for itchy skin

When you got allergic contact dermatitis, you will feel very itchy. Do not scratch the itchy area, which will increase the itch. Use emollient cream continuously, and rub it on the itchy area. Emollient cream will soften the skin surface and prevent of losing skin liquid. Both ways can thicken and soften your skin. Emollient cream doesn’t have any effect to your skin, as it is free from perfume and lanolin.
