Asthma And Obesity in Children

Obesity, on all ages, has become one of main health problems in the world since early 21st century. And with the newest research, scientists found that asthma has a correlation with obesity. Obesity seems to increases the risk of getting asthma on children until their teenage period.

According to the international standard measurement of obesity, obese people or children are they who have BMI higher than 30. The heavier a child weigh, the bigger his or her risk of having asthma. When these kids have succeeded to lose their weight, their asthma symptoms are usually getting better.

What Is The Correlation between Asthma And Obesity?

Researchers found out that weight increasing of an obese child can leads to respiratory tract inflammation, which is one of asthma inducers. The increasing weight will also change the child’s lung mechanical function, which at the end can cause airways hyper-responsiveness.

On the other hand, the increase of abdominal and chest walls in obese children might lower their residual capacity functional. Because of that, their airways might get narrower, as lungs volume affect the airways diameter.

There is another possibility that connects asthma and obesity. It is the breathing habits of asthmatic obese children. These children use to breathe at higher frequency but lower volume, compared to them with normal weight. This can also lead to asthma.

Last but least, exercise gives a great benefit for asthmatic children. Asthmatic children with active physical activity have these advantages in their asthma life:

  • Require less asthma medication

  • Have less absence frequency from school

  • Have less anxiety (which often leads to asthma)

  • Have less frequency of hospital visit because of asthma attack

However, most obese child tends to avoid exercise or any other physical activities, which at the end increase their risk to get asthma.

Now that we know that asthma and obesity are correlating each other, we can pay more attention to our children’s diet, lifestyle, and activities. Remember! Asthma can be avoided when it is not too late!
