Asthma Attack

Important Things You Must Learn To Deal With Asthma Attack

Asthma attack is a condition when your asthma symptoms gets worsen to the level of severe asthma symptoms. This article will let you know what to do during an asthma attack, whether you are a patient or helping a patient. Either way, this knowledge is very important, as if we don’t take the right action, asthma attack can risk someone’s life.

If you have asthma, or if you have a family member or a colleague with asthma, remind them to have their own asthma action plan, so that when you see asthma symptoms on them (sometimes the patient do not feel it), you and the patient can take actions needed during an episode of asthma attack.

When you have prepared your own action plan, give copies to your family, friends and people at work too.

If your children have asthma, ask them to always bring the asthma action plan copy wherever they go. Give also copies to the school’s healthcare or teachers. Make sure that the action plan written in a simple language which is easy to understand. Remember, when the action plan is needed, usually it is an emergency cases of asthma attack when people need to take quick action/decision.

Take your asthma action plan form for free (in PDF) – to print it, color printer is required!

Or...download the asthma action plan file in MS Excel where you can type your personal data or add more info before print it.

You can get detailed guidance on how to use the asthma action plan here.

How Do You Know That It Is An Emergency Situation ?

* When an asthma patient shows severe asthma symptoms described as ‘red zone’ in his/her asthma action plan.

*
When the asthma does not respond to medication (asthmaticus condition). An emergency treatment is needed in this condition, as oxygen level is decreasing and carbon dioxide is concentrated in blood, which cause dizziness or headache.

What To Do During An Asthma Attack

In above cases, you must realize that it is an emergency asthma attack situation that need immediate hospital/ER help. These are things you must do in an asthma attack:

  1. Give the patient an inhaler (bronchodillator).

  2. Call ambulance from the nearest ER/hospital (look for the number in the asthma action plan card).

  3. See the patient reaction after given one dose of inhaler, if it did not help, give another one (it’s OK to repeat the inhaler in short time during asthma attack).

  4. While waiting for ambulance or medical help, arrange and make sure the patient is in the most comfortable position to keep breathing. The best position is sitting upright on a chair, heading to the chair support with both hands leaning on the chair support (see picture on the right). Arrange so that the room gets as many fresh air as possible to help the patient to breath.

  1. A severe asthma attack will be frightening for the patient and the family. So, you must not get panic, as it will make the situation get worse. People who accompany a patient in asthma attack should keep calm, and convince the patient to also keep calm. The help will come soon, and nothing can get worse because you have done everything needed to do.

  2. Praying is one good and helpful thing you can do to relief the panic during an asthma attack. Remember, panic and anxiety will just worsen the patient’s asthma. So, it is very important to make the patient calm!
