Learning Your Asthma Symptoms Is Important To Prevent Severe Asthma Attack


Asthma symptoms knowledge must become the most important part of your asthma treatment. Observing early signs and anticipate light asthma symptoms could be very useful to prepare asthma action in earlier stage. Accurate observation will also help your doctor and you to decide the best asthma treatment.


Early Signs Of Asthma

Early signs of asthma appears before an episode of asthma attack. The signs are unique for every person. Even for a person, the early signs could be different on each asthma episode.

The early signs of asthma could be :

  • Change in breathing pattern

  • Change of mood

  • Sneezing

  • Stuffy nose

  • Itchy throat

  • Coughing, especially at night

  • Tiredness

  • Black circle under eyes

  • Troubled sleeping

  • Reducing of body tolerance against exercise

  • Decreasing of peak flow rate when using peak flow meter

From all signs, peak flow rate is the most accurate early sign of asthma you can rely on.


Asthma Symptoms

These asthma symptoms indicate that an asthma attack episode is just started...

  • Wheezing (make a whistling sound while breathing), and heavy breath

  • Coughing

  • Shortness of breath or even breathless

  • Chest tightness

  • Peak flow rate enter a dangerous level (between 50% to 80% of your best performance).

When the asthma symptoms begin to appear, it means that some changes has occurred in your airways, which cause the air flow is stuck. Take precaution actions to avoid more severe conditions. Consultation with doctors or other medical expert is needed at this stage.

Severe Asthma Symptoms

  • Non stop coughing

  • Wheezing and shortness of breath

  • Tightness in chest

  • Difficult talking and concentrating

  • Shortness of breath after few steps of walking

  • Rapid breathing

  • Bending back

  • Nostrils flaring open in every inhale

  • Retraction (tightened neck and chest muscles sucked in)

  • Pale and bluish skin, starting from around mouth area, and also on fingernails (cyanosis)

  • Peak flow rate decrease down to under 50% from the best performance

If you feel, or someone near you see one or all of the above asthma symptoms, immediately seek for emergency health and call for the patient’s family member.
