Can Birth Control Pills Reduce Asthma Symptoms?

Many studies have found a long time ago that female hormone is closely related to asthma. Fluctuation of the hormone that happens on certain days on the months could increase a woman’s asthma symptoms. Now a recent study found that birth control pills might help ease airways inflammation which occurs during that time. Is that true? Does it mean we can take birth control pills for some kind of medication?

Many women complain that their asthma symptoms get worse during their menstrual cycles. In this study, asthmatic women who took birth control pills did not appear to have a fluctuation on their asthma condition. This leads to a suggestion that birth control pills may reduce asthma symptoms by flattening out the hormone levels fluctuation.

In the research, they found out that when progesterone levels are elevated before menstruation, asthma symptoms are likely to be worse. Progesterone increases also aggravated allergy symptoms, with more severe allergic reactions evident on skin prick tests when progesterone levels were elevated.

However, it was only a study, and no conclusion had been made so far by any scientists. And if taking birth control pills come across your mind, just forget it! Birth control pills can have some serious side effects. Therefore taking them just to reduce asthma symptoms is not recommended. However, if you notice a difference in her symptoms throughout her menstrual cycle, it’s better to talk to your doctor about increasing your asthma medications during that particular time in your cycle.

Anyway, this study might help to manage asthma among premenopausal women. And we surely hope that scientists will come up with some good solution for asthma patient. Meanwhile, why don’t you try natural cure for your asthma?
