Gastric Reflux

How To Cure Gastric Reflux Problem To Avoid It From Turning Into Asthma Attack?

Gastric reflux (also known as heartburn) is one of asthma triggers that people often get confused on. They may think that what they are having is just another digestion problems, but in the end asthma symptoms can also appear. So, what is actually happening?

Gastric reflux or
Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition when acid from your stomach flow up to your esophagus, and cause an irritation in your esophagus, making a burning sensation in the area of your chest just below the breastbone. That's why people call it heartburn. Asthma patients get gastric reflux more often than people with no asthma.

When you get gastric reflux, acid that come from your digestion system will irritate one of your nerve systems, called vagus nerve. The irritation will cause narrower of your airways, which will trigger asthma symptoms.

Change Your Eating Habit To Avoid Gastric Reflux

Poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity are few among many conditions that cause GERD. And among those three, diet has the biggest contribution in gastric reflux. So, to avoid GERD to trigger your asthma, change your eating habit starting today! Try this gastric reflux diet :

  • Stay away from high fat and calories food.

  • Avoid large meals.

  • Minimize your consumption of coffee, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, carbonated beverages, and mint.

  • Take a balanced food plan with lots of green vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, wholegrain cereals, salads, fish, low-fat milk and plenty of fluids.

  • Have your dinner or supper at least.

To sum up, always eat your healthy food slowly in a relaxed environment, chewing the food well and taking it in small portions.

In addition to a healthy eating habit, these habits could also reduce gastric reflux risk:

  • Make the head of your sleeping bed ± 15 cm higher, as GERD often happens at night while you’re in lie down position.

  • Stop smoking, as smoking has a bad effect for your digestion system.

  • And last but not least, don’t forget to have a frequent exercise! Of course you should do it according to your health condition, don’t overdo it as excess exercise can also trigger your asthma!
