Women with asthma usually get their asthma worsen during the 29th to 36th week of the pregnancy. However it soon will get better after the pregnancy entering the last 4 weeks, or the last stages.

Is Asthma During Pregnancy Dangerous ?

Basically, a pregnant woman breathe for two persons. That is why controlling asthma in women who have pregnancy asthma condition, is very important. Difficult breathing could cause lack of oxygen supply for the fetus, which will put it in a huge danger. Several common serious pregnancy complications that is caused by uncontrolled asthma include pre-eclampsia (increased blood pressure of the mother), per-term labor and small birth.

However, when the asthma is under-controlled, woman with pregnancy asthma condition must not worry of having pregnancy complications. She can deliver her baby as safely as non asthmatic women. You can say an asthma is under-controlled, if the pregnant woman can keep doing her daily activities without having any asthma symptoms. She can sleep well without waking up at nights due to wheezing or difficult breathing, and her peak flow rate always reaches the best performances. Find here how to have a peak flow test.

Pregnancy asthma condition is affected by the increasing of estrogen and progesterone hormones. Theoretically, both hormones increase asthma condition by releasing muscles covering airways. But on the other hand, increase of other hormone such as PGF2 during pregnancy can worsen the asthma. Histamine increase from the womb tissues can also worsen asthma.

The most important thing is, a woman with a pregnancy asthma condition must have a routine check up from the beginning of the pregnancy. Ultrasound sonogram test can be performed since the 12-20th week of pregnancy to monitor the fetus growth. You can repeat the test on the second and third trimester, especially if your asthma gets worsen.

Make sure that both your obstetrical provider and your asthma specialist can have a good coordination to treat you. There are several drugs that you need to avoid during pregnancy, which include,

  • Iodides – cause ‘goiter’ to a new born baby

  • Tetracycline – leave a permanent sign on baby’s dents

  • Aspirin – if you are allergic to this drug, it can trigger a severe asthma attack

  • Antihistamine – should be avoided or if you need to take it, consult with your doctor

  • Sulfonamides – can cause increasing of bilirubin level in baby’s blood if taken during last stages of pregnancy.

Women with pregnancy asthma condition need a regular monitor on her condition during every visit to the doctors. And don’t forget to always report every medication you are taking, asthma medication or other medications. Precaution and a healthy lifestyle will ensure your and your baby’s health and safety.
