Milk Allergy

Everything You Need To Know If You Have Milk Allergy

Milk allergy, especially cow’s milk is often found in babies. Continue on reading about how to eliminate milk allergy to new born baby, and how to choose the safe food for your allergic baby, including milk-free recipes!

When you see signs of milk allergy in your baby, delete cow’s milk from your baby’s menu at least for 2 weeks. After that, you can try to re-introduce milk to your baby. If your baby does have milk allergy, the symptoms will disappear when you delete the milk from the menu, and will re-appear when your baby have milk.

The milk allergy symptoms could appear as rash, hives or redness around the mouth, which may spread to the rest of the body, immediate runny nose, sneezing and itchy watery eyes, coughing, choking or gagging, wheezing and trouble breathing, and cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.

When you are breastfeeding your baby, and your baby gets milk allergy, then you must exclude all dairy products from your menu, as milk protein can pass through the breast milk. Replace your need of calcium with supplements.

Milk Content in Foods – Reading Food Label

The main components of milk that can cause milk allergy are : whey and casein. The casein is the curd that formed when milk is left to sour, and the whey is the watery fraction which is left after the curd is removed.

For the safety of your baby, always read the label content of each food you are going to buy. These are terms that indicate the content of milk/milk protein that you should avoid:

Cow's milk / dairy / pasteurized milk
Milk formula
Evaporated milk / skim milk
Lactose free milk formula/ delactosed milk
Reduced allergenicity milk formula
Whey / whey powder
Butter/ butter fat / buttermilk
Yogurt / ghee
Cream / cheese / curds / sour cream /
sour milk

Margarine
Casein (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron) caseinate
Hydrolysed casein / Rennet casein
Recaldent (milk casein derivative)
Lactaid milk / Lacteeze milk (tablets or drops is still OK)
Lactalbumin / lactoglobulin / bovine scrum albumin
Hydrolysed milk protein

However when milk is used as a food binder to process another food, then it is likely that the milk content would not be stated in the ingredient list. Here are some foods that might contain milk:

  • Deli meat slicers are frequently used for both meat and cheese products.

  • Some brands of canned tuna fish contain casein (a milk protein).

  • Many non-dairy products contain casein (a milk derivative), listed on the ingredient labels.

  • Some meats may contain casein as a binder. Check the label carefully.

  • Many restaurants put butter on steaks after they have been grilled to add extra flavor. The butter might not be visible after it melts.

Milk Substitute for People With Milk Allergy

So, what if you or your baby do have milk allergy? Does it mean you can’t have milk, while milk is rich of nutrition as vitamin D, calcium and riboflavin?

The common solution is : soy milk. However, I recommend you to consult with a doctor or a dietician, especially for your baby, to decide the most suitable substitute of milk that is safe for you/your baby.

Besides milk that you drink, you often need milk to bake cakes or to cook. For a milk allergic patient, milk is the easiest ingredient to find the substitute when you want to bake him/her a cake. You can substitute milk with water or fruit juice in equal amount (e.g. a cup of milk = a cup of water). Lack of ideas to cook milk-free foods? Inspire yourself with these….
