Pollen Allergy

How To Stay Active And Healthy Without Pollen Allergy

Pollen allergy, also known as ‘hay fever’, often attack during springs and summers. When you cannot escape from your living area during those seasons, there are several things that you can do to protect you or your families from pollen allergy.

Pollen is a very small particles or microspores that are brought either by the wind or by insects (butterflies, bees) from one flower to another. As pollen is very small and light, it can fly and stay in the air for a long time, and spreads out as far as several miles with the wind.

These flying pollen can cause pollen allergy or hay fever, when inhaled through nose and mouth, or when having in contact with eyes. And when it finds way to your lungs, pollen allergy can induce asthma attack.

Pollen Allergy or Hay Fever Symptoms

During the months of April-September, people with pollen allergy may suffer from these symptoms,

  • Itchy and watering eyes

  • Itchy and blocked nose

  • Sneezing

  • Itchy ears

  • Sinusitis

  • Lack of energy and motivation

Those symptoms come from pollen allergic reaction in the nose, eyes and throat. The allergen will stimulate your immune system cells to produce histamine and other chemical substances, which cause the blood vessel to get bigger and then leaked.

Many students failed to get best results in their exams, in schools that set their exam during these seasons, therefore it is important for you to learn about pollen allergy and what you can do to control it.

How To Control Pollen Allergy

As pollen is very light and can fly anywhere with the wind, it is difficult to avoid it. All you can do is to minimize the pollen allergy while trying to keep balancing your life and doing your normal activities, by following these tips,

  • First of all, get to know what type of pollen allergy you or your families suffer by having skin prick test. After that, find out the exact schedule of that certain flower to begin its pollen season. Pollen season will be different from one region/nation to the other, that’s why it will be more accurate to find the schedule of your own region. This is the world pollen calendar, follow the link to find the calendar of your own region : World Pollen Calendar. If you can predict when the next season will begin, you can have better preparation to control pollen allergy.

  • Limit your exposure to the outdoor air, especially in a sunny, hot and dry days. The pollen level usually increases at those days.

  • Plan to have your outdoor activities in the morning or after raining, when the pollen level is low.

  • Wear your glasses when you go out to protect your eyes from pollen.

  • If you spend much time traveling by car, nowadays you can find cars with air filter to avoid pollen in the car interior.

  • When pollen level is high, immediately change your clothes right after entering the house.

  • Keep all windows closed during pollen seasons.

  • Do not dry your clothes outside the house during summer, to prevent pollen sticking on your clothes.

  • Do not plant too many hays in your garden to minimize pollen.

  • Pollen allergy patient should not do lawn mowing during pollen season.

  • Do your gardening only on cold, wet or cloudy days.

  • Choose plant whose pollen carried by insect, such as marigold or roses, as the pollens are usually bigger and heavier, which won’t cause pollen allergy.

  • For you who works, plan to take your leave during the pollen seasons, and go to beaches or countries with more moist air.
