Weather And Climate Change

How Can The Weather And Climate Change Situations Affect Your Asthma, And How To Live With It ?

Your living environment is very closely related to your health, especially if you have asthma. However, it is sometimes not that easy to just decide to move your family to a new area or even a new country just to be adapted to the weather! There are a lot of more important things that involved and must be considered for such a huge decision. But that doesn’t mean you cannot avoid asthma trigger !

One of asthma triggers that affect the most of people with asthma is weather and/or climate change, especially immediate or extreme climate change, such as from cold to hot or from hot to cold. Windy conditions and changes in the humidity and barometric pressure are also included in the weather and climate change factor.

Too cold and dry room

Breathing in a room with air conditioner that is turned too cold and dry can cause your airway to be narrower. To overcome it, wear scarf around your neck that cover also your lower part of your nose and your mouth. This will warm and humidify the air that you breathe.

Windy days

Use also scarf in windy days. Dry and windy weather can stir up pollen and mold in the air, leading to asthma problems for some people.

High humidity

For you who live in countries with high humidity, try to stay in an air-conditioned room as long as possible, as air conditioner can maintain temperature and humidity in a room.

Winter season

If you are suffering from asthma, winter season is the time to be particularly careful. In winter time make sure you always wear your gloves, scarves, hats and whatever else you can to keep yourself warm. During the winter season also ensure you don't have damp floors or are wearing damp clothes, and always have your asthma medication handy.

How To Keep Your Children From Asthma Attack During Bad Weather

  • Watch the forecast for pollen and mold counts as well as other conditions (extreme cold or heat) that might affect your child's asthma.
  • Keep your child indoors early in the morning (before 10 AM) when pollen is at its highest levels.
  • Keep windows closed at night to keep pollens and molds out. If it's hot, use air conditioning, which cleans, cools, and dries the air.
  • Limit your child's outdoor activities on peak trigger days.
  • Make sure your child wears a scarf over his or her mouth and nose outside during very cold weather.
  • Your child shouldn't mow the lawn or rake leaves, and should be kept away from freshly cut grass and leaf piles.
  • Make sure your child always has rescue asthma medication, on hand.
  • Create an asthma diary of your child’s symptoms and possible triggers of asthma, and talk to your child's doctor.
