What Is Asthma ?

Are All Breathing Problem = Asthma ? To Treat Asthma, You Must First Learn About The Ailment Itself

On the event of World Asthma Day on May 2004, it is revealed that quantity of asthma patients will increase in the coming years. On 2005, asthma patients in the world has achieved 400 million of people, with increase of 180.000 patients every year ! In USA children of 5-14 years of age with asthma have increased 72% in fourteen years.

Why these things happened ? What’s wrong with our living environment ? Do we have to be more clean and healthy ? Don’t get wrong! Researches have indicated that asthma patients in developing country are less in quantity compared to countries with lower pollution level.

Doesn’t make any sense ?

That’s why you should learn more about ‘what is asthma ?’

What Is Asthma ?

Asthma is the lungs chronic conditions that cause breathing problem.

The airways (the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs) of an asthma patient is very sensitive and can give hyper-responsive effect when having stimulated. As the reaction, the airways will be narrower and irritated, and then blocking incoming air. Because of the air blocking, several symptoms will appear, such as coughing, shortness of breath, breathing difficulty, and noisy breathing.

The cause of airways narrower can be :

v      Airways inflammation (your airways become red colored, inflamed, and produce accumulated thick mucus).

v      Bronchoconstriction (the constriction of the airways in the lungs due to the tightening of surrounding smooth muscle, with consequent coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath). Bronchoconstriction can also be due to an accumulation of thick mucus.

Here is a simple example of what will happen in your airways once some dust or micro particles ‘visited’ your nose :

When a ‘stranger’ comes into your airways by coincident (dust, bacterial, etc), the particles will be captured by your mucus membrane that cover inside of your nose, mouth, trachea, bronchi and bronchiole.

Your body (or airways in this case) has its own defense systems to get rid of that ‘stranger’. These are how the defense systems work :

  1. Cilia

Your inner side of airways is covered by small structures like smooth hair called cilia. This small organs job is to move smoothly and swipe every ‘stranger’ out to your mouth.

  1. Coughing

When your cilia don’t do its job well, you will cough in trying to throw away that ‘stranger’.

  1. Inflammation

When cilia and coughing are still not strong enough to throw away that ‘stubborn stranger’, your body will show its last defense, inflammation. Inflammation gives a signal to your immune system to send more ‘army’ to attack the ‘stranger’. Inflammation will produce more mucus, trigger heavier coughing, and even cold. All of those symptoms are signals that your body immune system is fighting intensely any virus or bacterial (your ‘stranger’ guy!).

Now, let’s get out to your outside of the airways. There are some layers of muscles that cover up your bronchiole. Irritation that occurred inside bronchiole can make those layers of muscles become stretched and wrinkled, or spasm. At the end, both mucus membrane irritation and muscle spasm will narrower your airways, and cause you shortness breath or difficult breathing OR…Asthma !

So, now after you got clear picture about ‘what is asthma’ , continue to the more important part : what causes asthma
