Wheat Allergy, as well as gluten allergy, is also another common asthma inducer. What is the connection between wheat allergy and gluten allergy? What are the symptoms? And how to avoid it? Keep reading...

You must be cautious when one day your children had skin reactions such as rashes, hives, and eczema a few minutes after eating some wheat-contained food. It is possible that your children got wheat allergy.

However, in several cases of wheat allergy, the symptoms could appear a few hours later. Other reactions to wheat allergy that involve your children intestines include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, indigestion, and stomach cramps.


Wheat Allergy & Gluten Allergy

There are four proteins that is contained in wheat, they are : albumins, globulins, prolamins and glutelins (or gluten). So, gluten is one of the protein that is contained in wheat, which is difficult to digest by some people, and that’s why becomes the predominant allergen in wheat. Besides in wheat, gluten is also found in rye, barley and oats.

Actually, wheat allergy and gluten allergy is slightly different. Gluten allergy is known as celiac/coeliac disease/celiac sprue, an auto-immune disorder. People with celiac disease will not lose their sensitivity to gluten substance, and that’s why requires a lifelong restriction of gluten. While people with wheat allergy have an IgE-mediated response to wheat protein. They must only avoid wheat.


Foods With Wheat & Gluten Contents

Before buying food products for people with wheat allergy and gluten allergy, always read the content label very carefully. These are the common names of food products you should be cautious when reading the label, as they contain wheat and gluten inside it:
 

Whole wheat flour
All purpose flour
White flour
Whole meal flour
Graham flour
Plain and self raising flour
Durum wheat

Semolina (refined durum flour)
Gluten/vital gluten
Triticale (wheat and rye blend)
Couscous (cracked wheat)
Bulgar (partially cooked and toasted cracked wheat)
Kamut, Spelt
Barley, Farro, Farina, Polenta

 
You should also be aware of foods that might contain wheat. These are some of many of them :

 

alcoholic beverages, some baby foods, barley malt
batter-fried foods, biscuits, bologna
bouillon, bran, bread, bread crumbs
bulgur, buns, cakes, candy
cereals, chocolate, cocoa, cold cuts
cookies, cornbread, crackers, cream of wheat
croutons, doughnuts, dumplings, farina
flours, graham crackers, granola, gravies
hot dogs, ice cream, ice cream cones, liverwurst
macaroni, malt products, malted milk, matzos
mayonnaise, MSG, muffins, noodles
ovaltine, pancake mixes, pasta
pastries, pepper, pies, pita bread, pizza
pretzels, puddings, pumpernickel bread, rolls
rye bread, sauces, sausages, soups
soy sauce, tamari, spaghetti, tortillas
vermicelli, waffles, wheat germ, some yeasts

 

So, what can you eat, then? Relaxed…I have gathered some alternatives for wheat substitute, and also some recipes for wheat-free foods. Very suitable for wheat allergy patients. So if you want to serve the best meals for your children, keep on reading….

Alternatives for wheat and gluten :

  • Corn : flour, chips, tortilla, nachos, popcorn, etc.

  • Millet : flour, pasta, flakes

  • Buckwheat :

  • Rice : flour, pasta, etc. Brown rice is the best

  • Quinoa

  • Amaranth, tapioca, arrowroot, gram and lentil flour

Alternatives for wheat only :

  • Oats : oatmeal, flour, oatcakes

  • Rye : bread, flour, crispbread

  • Barley : flour (usually for pancakes)
